Photo Guidelines

Follow these requirements to ensure your photo passes State Department compliance

✓ Do's

White Background

Take your photo against a plain, bright white wall or background. No patterns or clutter.

Natural Lighting

Use natural daylight or even room lighting. Avoid harsh shadows on your face.

Neutral Expression

A natural smile is fine, but keep lips closed. No teeth showing.

Full Head & Shoulders

Show your full face, hair, and upper shoulders/chest. Must be a close-up but not just your face.

Head Space

Leave some space above your head (about 1/8 of the frame). Don't crop too close.

Face the Camera

Look directly at the camera. Straight-on angle, not turned or tilted.

✕ Don'ts

No Glasses

Remove any eyeglasses (contacts are fine). Your eyes must be fully visible.

Nothing Obstructing Face

Hair, hands, scarves, hats, or masks can't cover any part of your face.

No Filters or Edits

Use an unedited, natural photo. Our AI verifies photo authenticity.

No Busy Background

Avoid patterns, people, objects, or any distractions in the background.

No Red Eye or Poor Lighting

Ensure proper lighting, clear focus, and good image quality (min 600×600px).

No Extreme Angles

Head must be straight. No tilting, turning, or extreme angles.
